Extra material needed for the 2010 exam - Chapter 4 This page lists the material from the old Edexcel syllabus which isn't covered by my new Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry book. Allotropes of carbon The old syllabus says that you should "recall that diamond and graphite are allotropes of carbon". Allotropes are two or more different forms of an element in the same physical state. Diamond and graphite are two different forms of the element carbon in the solid state. Obviously, you still need to know about the structure and properties of these two forms of carbon. The only addition is the use of the word "allotrope".
